Invoking the Beloved: The Music and Poetry of Islamic Spirituality will be held at 7pm on Sunday, Feb. 24th in Battell Chapel. The program will include an introduction by Dr. Homayra Ziad, Assistant Professor of Religion at Trinity College; a keynote address on the role of Islamic spirituality in a pluralistic world by Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani, renowned scholar and spiritual guide; and interactive performances by acclaimed nasheed (traditional Islamic vocal music) Lebanese singer Ali Elsayed, the talented oud player Bouchaib Abdelhadi and members of the Montreal-based Burdah Ensemble.

Islam Awareness Series 2013 Meet and Greet

This Friday marks a massive kick off to the MSA’s Islamic Awareness series! At 6:30 pm in the Ezra Stiles Common Room, there will be a meet and greet with tons of free Turkish food and other refreshments! So we hope to see everyone there for free food and fun!

The 11th Annual Eid Banquet

Join us as we commemorate Abraham’s sacrifice during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha and celebrate the unique intimacy and diversity of the Yale community. The banquet will take place at Commons Dining Hall on Wednesday, November 7th, 2012 at 5:30 pm.

This year’s keynote speaker is Haroon Moghul, who is a Fellow at the New America Foundation and an Associate Editor at Religion Dispatches. He writes and speaks frequently on Islamic history and culture, civil rights, foreign policy, and radicalism and religious identity.

AMAL writes a letter to NYAG

The Yale MSA cosigned a letter from the Association of Muslim American Lawyers to the NY Attorney General’s Office about the NYPD investigations. The letter/motion urges the NYAG to investigate the NYPD for its spying programs, including the MSA, the Third Jihad movie and other stop and frisk matters.

Yale President Richard Levin supports the MSA

The Yale MSA thanks President Levin for his support:

“The Associated Press has released a document showing that the New York Police Department monitored the web sites of many Muslim Students Associations, including our Association here at Yale, and may have conducted improper surveillance of Muslim students at other institutions. I am writing to state, in the strongest possible terms, that police surveillance based on religion, nationality, or peacefully expressed political opinions is antithetical to the values of Yale, the academic community, and the United States. Also I want to make sure our community knows that the Yale Police Department has not participated in any monitoring by the NYPD and was entirely unaware of NYPD activities until the recent news reports.

The Yale Muslim Students Association has been an important source of support for Yale students during a period when Muslims and Islam itself have too often been the target of thoughtless stereotyping, misplaced fear, and bigotry. Now, in the wake of these disturbing news reports, I want to assure the members of the Yale Muslim Students Association that they can count on the full support of Yale University.”
